Go Red and White to shine the light on childhood eye cancer

Host a simple, fun dress down (or up) event at your workplace or school to promote awareness of white pupil as an early sign of eye cancer in children.

We particularly encourage you to hold a Red and White Day on May 14, or another day during World Retinoblastoma Week, which runs for seven days from the second Sunday in May.

World Rb Week focuses on achieving early diagnosis through awareness of retinoblastoma, and increasing understanding of global issues in care of children, survivors and their families.

Wearing Red and White is a great way to educate friends and coworkers about the white pupil as the most common early sign of retinoblastoma, and importance of turning off a camera’s Red Eye Reduction facility to check for this white reflex.

Organizing a Red and White Day is simple, educational and fun

• Arrange with your office or school management to host a Red and White Day during World Rb Week in May, preferably as close to May 14 as possible.
• Invite staff / students to wear Red and White that day, in return for a donation – we suggest $3 / £2.
• Arrange a way to collect donations on the day.
• Sell red & white cupcakes in the reception or cafeteria.
• Host a competition between teams, departments or classes.
• Offer incentives for the most cupcakes bought or sold by a team, department or class (e.g. a Starbucks gift card, or free lunch).
• Hold a “costume contest” for the most creative outfit, best dressed person, department, class or team, or best group participation.
• Hold a small thank you reception with red and white food (e.g. brie and cranberry sandwiches and iced cookies, and red & white wine.  Discuss the importance of checking children’s photos for white reflex and how each person who participated is helping to make a difference.  Use our Leukocoria section as your guide to answer people’s questions.
• Be prepared to talk about how people can get involved with WE C Hope.
• Ensure all participants feel engaged and positive, no matter how large of small their contribution.
• Take photos of your red and white revelries, and share them with us!

No one wants to think of babies having cancer.  By sharing this information in a fun way, you will help build life and sight saving awareness and hope.  So let your creativity flow and turn your world red and white this year to shine the light on eye cancer early detection for children and families.
