One Retinoblastoma World 2021
100% Virtual |
1 – 3 October, 2021
The 6th One Retinoblastoma World Conference took place over the first weekend of October 2021. We were delighted to welcome 170 medical professionals, retinoblastoma survivors, young patients and family members for three days of programming, community and collaboration.
One Rb World 2021 was hosted by World Eye Cancer Hope USA, and organized together with Dr. Sandra Staffieri, retinoblastoma care co-ordinator at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Australia.
This year’s conference was to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, immediately preceding the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) world congress. We hoped to host a hybrid event, with some participation in person, and some virtual to ensure global access.
However, due to the ongoing pandemic, international travel restrictions, global disparities in vaccination access, and safety concerns, we found that staying 100% virtual was the only way to plan effectively and prioritize everyone’s safety.
The program took place over three days, with varied start times to be as welcoming as possible to our global community. While we are very sad COVID-19 kept us physically apart for a second year, we were delighted to come together online again, to share expertise and lived experience, to learn from one another, and to advance care for all affected by retinoblastoma throughout life.
We are proud to have brought One Rb World to the Pacific region, and the wider world, despite the ongoing global challenges of the pandemic. And we look forward to the day when we can be together again in the same location.
From Our Blog – October 25, 2021
This year’s program included sessions co-led by clinicians, researchers, survivors and parents on a range of topics, including:
- Prosthetic eyes
- Retinoblastoma around the world
- Early detection methods and awareness campaigns
- Child life and psychosocial supports
- Ethnography in retinoblastoma
- New treatments and research
- Mental health and wellness
Child Life Programs ran concurrently on all three days, providing fun, wellbeing and learning activities for youngsters diagnosed with eye cancer and their siblings. Activities addressed general coping techniques, and supports for specific medical experiences.

We look forward very much to welcoming our global community back to the One Rb World conversation in October 2024, finally in Honolulu, alongside the International Society of Paediatric Oncology World Congress. Save The Date, and we hope to see you in Hawaii! We will share more information as soon as it becomes available.
Our plans for the 2023 conference in Ottawa, Canada, have been cancelled due to the timing of the first International Society of Ocular Oncology congress in Africa.
ISOO Africa 2023 will take place on August 21 – 23 in Mombasa, Kenya. Key members of our event planning and scientific program team from Canada, the UK and USA are involved in the planning and support of this meeting, as are many of our anticipated speakers. We have therefore taken the decision to cancel One Rb World 2023 so we can all prioritise retinoblastoma care In Africa.
Most children with retinoblastoma in Africa die. Many never reach specialist care, and families who do often struggle to continue treatment due to the costs, lack of support, and practicalities of being far from home.
Well established retinoblastoma programs and partnerships in all regions of Africa show that childhood eye cancer can be cured throughout the continent, but the challenges are great for families and medical professionals.
ISOO is the primary organization for ocular oncologists and allied professionals, with a mission to advance eye cancer research and care worldwide. ISOO Africa 2023 will focus on retinoblastoma care in Africa, the challenges that cause so many children to die, and practical solutions to improve care and cure. The program includes sessions on early diagnosis, pathology, management of advanced Rb, vision-saving opportunities, psychosocial supports, and international collaborations.
We fully support this meeting, and we are delighted to be involved in its planning, promotion, and program. We appreciate your understanding of our decision to cancel One Rb World 2023, and we look forward very much to bringing you news from ISOO Africa in the Autumn.
