One Rb World 2026 conference logo layered over a vibrant panoramic night-time view of the San Antonio River Walk. Logo text reads: One Retinoblastoma World | San Antonio, Texas, September 12–14, 2026. Between the location and date, a small brick red quatrefoil outlined in white and clay pink features a sky blue horseshoe with white nail heads along the curve cupping a white lone star. The main conference logo features a target-like eye graphic with brightly coloured concentric rings surrounding a pearlescent circle, with a strand of DNA in the inner-most ring. In the background, festive San Antonio lights are strung across trees and buildings, all reflecting on the water. Colourful umbrellas and tables line the River Walk, evoking a cheerful, lively atmosphere.

2021 Meeting

100% Virtual | Honolulu, Hawaii

1 – 3 October, 2021

The 6th One Retinoblastoma World Conference took place over the first weekend of October 2021.  We were delighted to welcome 170 medical professionals, retinoblastoma survivors, young patients and family members for three days of programming, community and collaboration.

One Rb World 2021 was hosted by World Eye Cancer Hope USA, and organized together with Dr. Sandra Staffieri, retinoblastoma care co-ordinator at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Australia.

This year’s conference was to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, immediately preceding the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) world congress.  We hoped to host a hybrid event, with some participation in person, and some virtual to ensure global access.

However, due to the ongoing pandemic, international travel restrictions, global disparities in vaccination access, and safety concerns, we found that staying 100% virtual was the only way to plan effectively and prioritize everyone’s safety.

The program took place over three days, with varied start times to be as welcoming as possible to our global community. While we are very sad COVID-19 kept us physically apart for a second year, we were delighted to come together online again, to share expertise and lived experience, to learn from one another, and to advance care for all affected by retinoblastoma throughout life.

We are proud to have brought One Rb World to the Pacific region, and the wider world, despite the ongoing global challenges of the pandemic. And we look forward to the day when we can be together again in the same location.

The 2021 Program

This year’s program included sessions co-led by clinicians, researchers, survivors and parents on a range of topics, including:

  • Survivorship
  • Genetics
  • Prosthetic eyes
  • Retinoblastoma around the world
  • Early detection methods and awareness campaigns
  • Child life and psychosocial supports
  • Ethnography in retinoblastoma
  • New treatments and research
  • Mental health and wellness

Child Life Programs ran concurrently on all three days, providing fun, wellbeing and learning activities for youngsters diagnosed with eye cancer and their siblings.   Activities addressed general coping techniques, and supports for specific medical experiences.

Read our September 13 blog from conference co-convenor Sandra Staffieri, in which she gave an overview of the program, highlighting some of the sessions and goals: One Retinoblastoma World 2021 – Sharing Ideas, Opportunities and Friendship.
